The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Essentially his is the global response to repair and create a better world. They are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
The SDG Conceptual Framework, the numbering and categorisation of these areas into essentially boxes is a tool that was developed to help governments and other stakeholders to create and choose ambitious and effective sustainabledevelopment goals and targets, which fulfil the commitments made by world leaders at Rio+20. All of which aim to create a better, safer and more sustainable world by 2030.
This is much more than something global organisations such as the UN, or World Scouting (whom is the world’s largest contributor to the SDGs) it is something we can work with locally, nationally or even on a personal level.
Even writing this article to share and discuss the ideas of using the SDG framework as a way to lead a more sustainable and fair life meets a personal commitment to SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, by sharing information on how to align your thinking and activities with the SDG framework, and also SDG 17 for sharing ideas on how to partner with and for the goals.
The question that may come to mind is “Whats the point?” And the answer as always is a simple one. By acting locally, together in a unified way we can and do change the world. If you’re frustraighted by lack of action in inequality, climate change, housing, or any other area of need in your community, use a combined effort focused on Sustainable Development Goals as a way to effect change and to bring about a better world.
All activities on this site, and some discussion articles will now feature how this site itself aligns to the SDGs, and also how you can use the content towards your own organisational or personal commitment to creating a better world by using the SDG framework.
